DETECT-A-FIRE® Rate-Compensated Heat Detectors

Proven Performance. Predictive Precision.

For more than 65 years, the DETECT-A-FIRE® (D-A-F) detector has set a trusted standard in heat detection technology. Its innovative, rate-compensated design ensures fast, accurate activation across a wide range of fire conditions, delivering reliable performance and eliminating common challenges like activation lag or nuisance alarms.

Built from stainless steel with a hermetically sealed contact assembly, each detector is engineered for repeatable, long-life performance. Whether protecting industrial process lines, ovens, paint spray booths, turbines, or dust collectors  DETECT-A-FIRE® reliably remains the “heart” of many fire protection systems.

Key Advantages
  • Rate-Compensated Design
Anticipates fire conditions by activating slightly below the set temperature in fast-rising heat events, ensuring earlier response without false trips.
  • Self-Restoring
Resets automatically after activation—no replacement parts, no downtime.
  • Rugged Construction
Stainless steel shell withstands vibration, shock, and harsh environmental conditions.
  • Flexible Mounting
Available in vertical, horizontal, and pendant configurations for a wide variety of applications.
  • Precision Factory Calibration
Every unit undergoes thermal stabilization, burn-in, and 100% functional testing to guarantee consistent performance across all operating ranges.
  • Certified Reliability
UL, ULC, FM, and CE approved for use in hazardous and general industrial zones.
Applications:

The DETECT-A-FIRE® detector is ideal for use with Clean agent, CO₂, Wet and Dry chemical, or Water suppression systems for protection of:

  • Power generation turbines
  • Commercial and industrial cooking operations
  • Industrial ovens, paint spray booths, and dust collectors
  • Marine and offshore spaces and processes
  • High-vibration or high-temperature manufacturing environments
  • Outdoor  areas such as gas stations or assets such as off-road vehicles where ambient temperatures fluctuate but precision activation is essential

How Detect a Fire Works
How It Works:

Traditional detectors often lag or misfire under rapid temperature changes. DETECT-A-FIRE® solves this through a rate-compensated mechanical design:

  • The outer shell expands quickly in heat, while internal struts expand more slowly.
  • This temperature differential causes the contacts to close slightly before the full calibrated setpoint, “anticipating” fire conditions during fast-developing events.
  • In slow, steady heating, the detector activates right at its precise setpoint, ensuring accuracy under any growth rate.
  • This patented mechanism enables the D-A-F to perform dependably in both gradual smoldering fires and sudden flash events, making it one of the most versatile heat detectors available today.

Maintenance & Testing

DETECT-A-FIRE® detectors are repeatable and testable.

  • Use controlled heat testing at rates below 1°F per minute to ensure accurate calibration behavior.
  • Avoid oil bath or direct flame testing to prevent misinterpretation of activation behavior.
  • Inspect for physical integrity and verify wiring annually per NFPA 72 recommendations.
